Portfolios / Custom Quoteboards are available as free tools for My Barchart subscribers. Use Portfolios to create personal quotes pages ("My Quotes") or to track your investments.
Portfolios may also be downloaded to Excel, so you can manipulate the data in any way you wish. Any portfolio can also be sent to you via an end-of-day email. Simply edit the portfolio, then check the "End-Of-Day Email" box.
Portfolios come with four standard Views: a Quoteboard, Portfolio, Technical, and Performance View. You may also apply any Custom View you've created to a portfolio. All Views include links to the chart, quote and opinions for every symbol. You may also sort by any of the columns by clicking on the header for that column.
You'll be asked to assign a "Default View" to any new portfolio you create. The Default View is the initial view you will see whenever you look at your portfolio. TIP: Use "Quoteboard View" when you plan to use the portfolio as a "watchlist", and "Portfolio View" when you plan to enter transaction Quantities, Prices and Dates for each symbol. Your portfolios are updated throughout the trading day. The Latest Prices are delayed, per exchange rules. You will see new price data appear on the page every 10 seconds for the first minute you visit the page, as indicated by a yellow "flash". (Prices are updated every 1 minute thereafter.) If trading has closed for the day, the Last Price column on any view will be the closing price for that trading day. The Date column will show the last trading date.
The Portfolio Management page allows you to View, Edit, or Delete custom quoteboards ("watchlists") or portfolios used for investment tracking. An unlimited number of portfolios may be added for stocks, funds, ETFs, commodity or forex symbols. In addition, you can send any portfolio to yourself in an End-of-Day email.
The first time you access the Portfolio page, you are asked to begin by creating a new Portfolio or Custom Quoteboard. To VIEW a Portfolio / Custom Quoteboard Switch the View on the portfolio using any of the links (Quoteboard View, Portfolio View, Technical, Performance, or and of your Custom Views).
To EDIT a Portfolio
"Details" refers to the entries you make when you decide to track profit and loss for a portfolio. Details include the Cash Value, Actions (Bought/Sold), Quantities, Entry/Exit Dates, Entry/Exit Prices, and Fees.
When Adding or Editing a Portfolio, basic information is required at the top of the page:
This page allows you to view all of your portfolios together. Portfolios are initially displayed using the last View used on the page. You may switch the view by clicking on the Quoteboard, Portfolio, Technical Performance, or a Custom View link at the top of the page.
All your Portfolios may be viewed using FlipCharts or exported to Excel. Use the links at the very top of the page to view/export ALL portfolio data, or use the links in the individual portfolios to get only one portfolio's data. When using the Portfolio View, a Grand Total for all Portfolios is displayed at the top of the page, and totals for each individual portfolio follow. You may also Edit, Delete, or show Profit / Loss details for any portfolio from this page.
The Organize Portfolios function is used to reorder, rename, or remove portfolios and custom quoteboards. This determines the order in which portfolios are presented on the "View All Portfolios" page, and also determines the order in which they are presented in the portfolio drop-down list.

A Historical Quote is a detailed quote that includes activity for the entered date, PLUS the previous four days of trading prices. Included are the Open, High, Low, Last, Change, % Change and Volume figures.
My Barchart subscribers can view a Historical Quote on any active stock or commodity contract within our database. Historical data for stocks can be retrieved circa 1990, although many symbols have historical data going back even further. Futures: if searching for an expired futures contract, use a 2-digit year (GCG09 rather than GCG9) The Historical Quote also includes Historical Highs and Lows and Historical New Highs and Lows that were recorded as of the date entered at the top of the screen. This is a listing of the weekly (5-Day), monthly (20-Day), quarterly (65-Day), 100-Day, one-year (260-Day), and Year-to-Date high and low prices, and the corresponding dates on which they were made. The Historical New Highs and Lows shows the number of times the symbol hit a new high and a new low price in the past n-days from the date entered at the top of the screen, along with percentage change from the historical quote price to the n-day high or low price. Once you've entered a date into the field at the top of the page, you can quickly move to the Previous or Next date by clicking the links:
My Barchart subscribers can generate a Historical Chart on any active stock or commodity contract within our database.
Historical data can be retrieved circa 1990, although many symbols have historical data going back even further. Note: A Daily chart is generated using the date you enter at the top of the page as the Starting Date for the data range. If you change the chart to an Intraday, Weekly, or Monthly chart, the date range for data will automatically adjust unless you enter and Ending Date in the chart form.

Historical data can be retrieved circa 1990, although many symbols have historical data going back even further.
Note: The prices at the top of the page are TODAY'S current Price, Change and Change%. The data presented on the opinions page is the Historical data you've requested. When you first access the Historical Opinions page, the date defaults to one year ago from today's date. Use the date picker to change the date, or enter a new date in MM/DD/YY format. Unique to Barchart.com, Opinions analyzes a stock or commodity using 13 popular analytics in short-, medium- and long-term periods. Results are interpreted as buy, sell or hold signals, each with numeric ratings and summarized with an overall percentage buy or sell rating. Each Opinion requires six months' worth of trading activity and run the prices through 13 different technical indicators. A link is provided at the top right of the page to Show or Hide Signal Strength and Direction. (View help for Signal Strength and Direction.) After each calculation the program assigns a Buy, Sell or Hold value with the study, depending on where the price lies in reference to the common interpretation of the study. For example, a price above its moving average is generally considered an upward trend or a buy. Each study links to a chart to give you a graphical interpretation of the result of the study. When on the Detailed Opinion page, a link is provided at the top right of the page to Show or Hide Signal Strength and Direction. Calculations
A Sell is assigned -1 point A Hold is assigned 0 points To keep the results in a more logical format, we factor the overall opinion by 1.04 to keep the end result in eighths, with the exception of a 100% buy or sells. This is why the opinions will be displayed {8%, 16%, ... 88%, 96% and 100%} rather the true calculated value over the number thirteen. At the bottom of the Opinion page is the price the Opinion studies are based on, along with the Support, Pivot Point, and Resistance numbers.
My Barchart subscribers can get Historical Snapshot Opinions on any active stock or commodity contract within our database.
Historical data can be retrieved circa 1990, although many symbols have historical data going back even further.
Note: The prices at the top of the page are TODAY'S current Price, Change and Change%. The data presented in the opinion is the Historical data you've requested. The Snapshot Opinion graphically lists overall opinion of today, yesterday, last week, and last month. The Snapshot page also contains the rating box, which ranks the overall strength and direction of the opinion taken from the Advanced opinions page. Strength is calculated by adding the different "buy" signal strengths and subtracting the "sell" signal strengths, then factoring each number by the strength rating of the opinion. The direction rating is calculated by adding the different buy signal directions and subtracting the different sell signal directions, then factoring each number by the direction rating of the opinion. Signal strength and signal direction are independent of buy or sell ratings. The totals are then compared to the average overall totals for all stocks and given a percentage figure of where they lie in relation to the strengths and directions of all other stocks, 0-10 being the lowest and 90-100 being the greatest. The top 1% of all stocks are also highlighted yellow. The higher the rating, the stronger the overall signal strength or direction.
Historical Download by Symbol
My Barchart subscribers can download 2 years of daily price history on any currently active stock or commodity contract. Simply enter the symbol in the entry box and click Download. You will get an Ascii file of open, high, low, close and volume price information for all stocks and mutual funds traded on the NYSE, AMEX and Nasdaq exchanges each day. These end-of-day files are compatible with all spreadsheet programs and Ascii-compatible charting software. End-of-Day Files for Stocks, Mutual Funds, and OTC Stocks You may also download End-of-Day Historical Data for all Stocks, Mutual Funds, or OTC Stocks for a specific trading day. Historical data is available starting from January 02, 2003. Enter the date you wish data for, click Get Files, then select whether you want to download Stocks, Mutual Funds, or OTC Stocks. The output file contains an Ascii file of open, high, low, close and volume price information for all stocks and mutual funds traded on the NYSE, AMEX and Nasdaq exchanges each day. This file is compatible with all spreadsheet programs and Ascii-compatible charting software. Note: If you select a weekend or holiday date, you will get data starting from the first day with data before that date (example, if you enter Sunday, May 23, the data will start with Friday, May 21 instead).
Once you create the chart, you will be asked if you want to Edit the New Chart (where you can add indicators, set the time series, etc.) or View All Charts (you'll be returned to the My Charts directory.)
Once a chart has been added to your My Charts Group, you can customize it with any available setting, and then save your chart so it can be retrieved at a later time.
The My Charts chart page is almost identical to the chart page found in other areas of the site. The differences are shown here:
Customizing Charts from a Portfolio Group or a Predefined Group If you customize and save changes to a chart from either a Portfolio Group or a Predefined group, the chart is saved under the "Uncategorized" chart group on the main My Charts directory page. You can then move the chart to one of your other Chart Groups using the Organize Charts page.
The Organize My Charts function is used to create, change or delete Chart Groups, and to add, reorder or remove charts from Groups. Chart Groups help you keep certain types of charts together on the chart directory page. For example, you may want one group for Stocks, one for Futures, one for Forex charts, etc.
Group Names are identified on the bar with a darker shade of gray; charts contained in the group are then organized below. Charts that were not added to a group are at the bottom of the page under "Uncategorized Charts". You may change Group Names or Chart Names by editing the data you see on the screen. Viewing Your Market Pages
Once you've created Market Pages, you are always first presented with the "default" Market Page. You identify a page as the default page either when the page is first created ("Add a Page"), or using "Configure Pages". Move between your Market Pages by selecting the page you wish to view from the drop-down list: ![]() Formatting a Market Page Once you've created a Market Page, it's time to drop content blocks into the different sections. The page has been divided up using dotted lines, depending on the layout you chose.
Configure: Click the Configure icon in the top right of the content block:
Move Content Blocks: Each content block that you place on your Market Page can be moved to another content block simply by dragging and dropping it. When you position your cursor on the header bar of the content block, a "move" icon appears:
With your mouse pointer ANYWHERE on the header bar, click and HOLD to drag the content to a new section on the page, then release your mouse button to DROP it. Collapse/Expand: Use the Collapse/Expand icon (at the top LEFT of the block's header bar) to collapse or expand the content. This can be helpful when you want to view content that is below the block, or when moving a content block to another section on the page.
Delete: Click the Delete icon (at the top RIGHT of the block's header bar) to remove the content completely from the page. You will be asked to confirm the deletion, as once a content block is deleted, it cannot be reactivated.
Problems with the Page Layout If the content blocks you've seleted for your Market Page don't fit on the page, you will see a yellow error message at the top of the page. This generally happens when you've selected a Quoteboard or a Quote, where there are too many data fields to display in the current layout of the page.
Click "show me" and the page will highlight any content block that doesn't fit in its current section. Note: These content blocks will appear with scroll bars at the bottom. You can always view the data not being displayed by using the scroll bar.
You have a number of options:
Page Name: You may change the Market Page Name. Page Names are a maximum of 50 characters.
Make Default: If checked, this Market Page will be the one to display when you go to the Market Pages section on your account. Layout: Shows the general layout, or "framework" for the Market Page. Choose from a 1-2-3- or 4-column layout, with an optional full-width "header" area. Confirm Layout Changes When you change the layout of a Market Page that already contains content blocks, you may see a warning message if the new layout cannot accomodate the data already placed on the page. For example, if you have a 3-column layout with a full-width header, and you want to change to a 2-column layout with no header, you'll need to decide what you want to do with the content blocks in the 3rd column and the header area.
